As with most charge cards, the Kohl’s Charge Card is quite limited. While it is backed by Capital One, it isn’t part of the Visa or Mastercard network, which means it can only be used with Kohl’s. Although this may limit the temptation to run up a bill, if you do carry a balance, you will get hit with some hefty interest charges.

Additionally, the cash back rewards offered with the card are quite high – but only slightly higher than general customers get with Kohl’s loyalty program and promotions. So, unless you are highly brand loyal to Kohl’s and feel confident that you will clear your balance each and every month, you may want to consider alternative credit cards that offer greater rewards potential.

  • Exclusive Discounts and Sales
  • Receipt Free Returns
  • Mobile App Options
  • MVC Status
  • Stack with Kohl’s Cash
  • High APR
  • Limited Acceptance
  • Need to Combine

Can I get pre-approved?

Yes, the Kohl’s website does offer the option to check if you’re pre approved for this charge card. This means that you can check if you qualify without any impact to your credit score.

How do I redeem rewards?

The rewards that you earn with the Kohl’s Charge Card are part of the brand’s reward program. They will automatically be converted into Kohl’s Cash that you can use towards your Kohl’s purchases.

The rewards are converted on the first of each month in $5 increments for the rewards you earned in the previous months. You should receive an email containing your Kohl’s Cash rewards, but you can manage your rewards through the Kohl’s app.

How hard is it to get a Kohl’s Charge Card?

You only need fair credit to qualify for the Kohl’s charge card and you can check if you pre qualify via the Kohl’s website. This means that if you are worried that you may have difficulty getting the card, you can check without any impact to your credit.

Pros and Cons

Just like any other credit card, the Kohl's credit card has some advantages and disadvantages:

Pros
Cons
Exclusive Discounts and Sales
High APR
Receipt Free Returns
Limited Acceptance
Mobile App Options
MVC Status
Stack with Kohl’s Cash

As a cardmember, you can enjoy access to exclusive sales throughout the year and monthly discounts.

You will also receive a special offer each year when you reach your card anniversary.

When you use your card to make purchases at Kohl’s, you don’t need to worry about remembering where you put the receipt if you need to make a return. The Kohl’s team can process any returns receipt free.

Kohl’s has a mobile app which allows you to manage your credit card account and pay your bills for additional convenience. You can also connect to the Kohl’s Pay platform, which offers mobile payment options.

You will gain MVC or Most Valued Customer status when you spend at least $600 per year with your Kohl’s Charge Card. This provides several benefits including a gift each year on your birthday and free shipping.

You can combine the exclusive discounts and offers provided with your Kohl’s Charge Card with Kohl’s Cash. This provides even greater rewards and more ways to save on your Kohl’s purchases for even greater value.

As with many store charge cards, the APR for the Kohl’s Charge Card is quite high. The APR is significantly higher than with regular credit cards, so you’ll be hit with bigger interest fees if you carry a balance.

If you don’t tend to pay your bill in full each month, you may be better with a card offering a promotional rate.

This is a charge card that does not belong to the major credit card networks such as Mastercard or Visa.

This does mean that it is limited to use at Kohl’s or when you’re purchasing items on the Kohl’s website.

Who is the Kohl’s Charge Card Best For?

Since this is a Kohl’s charge card, it is obviously best suited to those who are highly brand loyal to Kohl’s and are likely to already be using the Kohl’s loyalty program. With the charge card, you can immediately get a 50% increase on your rewards and you can combine the card with other offers to maximize the potential savings.

The card could also be a good option for those who want to get rewards for shopping at Kohl’s, but don’t want the temptation of a credit card that can be used anywhere. Since this card can only be used at Kohl’s and on Kohl’s website, you can’t run up a bill with other spending. Just be sure to clear the bill each month, as the APR is quite steep.

How To Maximize The Kohl’s Charge Card

As a store credit card, there are some ways to make the most of this card:

$600 per year is only an average of $50 per month, but it qualifies you for Most Valued Customer status. This not only provides a gift for your birthday, but you can also enjoy free shipping on your orders.

Even if you’re only popping into Kohl’s for a small item, it is still worth using your card, as you can access receipt free returns. This means that you don’t need to carry all those receipts just in case there is a problem with your purchase.

If you’re planning on a larger spending day, try to time your purchases. As a cardholder, you can access monthly discounts and a special offer on your card anniversary. This could represent significant savings on your larger purchase days.

FAQs

There are no official income requirements for this card. While your income will be assessed, it is not the only factor that will be considered when your application is being evaluated for an approval decision.

This card is not a good idea if you tend to carry a balance on your card or you don’t regularly shop with Kohl’s. In these circumstances, you would be better suited to a general rewards card that has an introductory low APR for new cardholders.

Unfortunately, the Kohl’s Charge Card does not offer any types of travel insurance coverage as part of its benefits package.

Credit Card Reviews Methodology

In order to determine the best possible credit cards, we look at things like fees, interest rates and rewards. We do this with companies that are associated with us as partners as well as other offerings. From there, we make a decision about what the best card is related to different categories and needs. We focus on interest rate cost & fees, especially the cost of carrying a balance, rewards – cards accumulate rewards in different currencies—points, miles, cash back—and their values vary widely usability – cards that accept a wide range of credit profiles and offer simple solutions for things like checking your credit score or contacting. We also consider customer reviews.

We look at cards related to good or excellent credit ratings that will then provide a range of different benefits and improvements for someone who has these scores. We also look at low fees when it comes to those who have lower credit scores.
